If so, then the Gender Studies Department has a great service opportunity for you! Gender Studies has partnered with the Inclusion Center, a local non-profit, to create an awesome internship program for interested majors. Starting next semester (spring), students will work together with the Inclusion Center and Gender Studies to learn and run a series of workshops with different youth groups in order to bring Gender Studies down the hill and down to earth. Training will begin in November, so if you are interested, please do not hesitate reply. Social Justice Series: Skin Deep

When: 11/09/09
Where: University of Utah College of Social Work, 395 South 1500 East
Hosted By: UofU College of Social Work
What: 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Men and Muscles - Dr. Trent A. Petrie, U of No. Texas Historically, eating disorders and body image concerns solely have been considered womens problems. But over the last 20 years, mens exposure to the same dysfunctional social messages about body size and shape and what is attractive has increased, resulting in dissatisfaction with their appearance and the use of pathological behaviors to change how they look. In this presentation, I will trace the changes that have occurred in the male sociocultural environment, linking it to mens current dissatisfaction with their bodies. In doing so, I also will identify male subcultures where the risk of disordered eating and body image concerns is heightened and discuss the special ways in which disordered eating is manifesting itself among boys and men. This event is free. Contact Irene M. Ota irene.ota@socwk.utah.edu or 801-581-8455 for more information.

Guest Speaker Carolyn Dinshaw

When: 11/12/09
Where: LNCO 3530 - 3:30pm
Hosted By:
What: Carolyn Dinshaw (Professor of Social & Cultural Analysis and English New York University) will speak on "How Soon is Now? Problems of the Present, Medieval and Modern." A monk wanders follows a bird beyond the cloister and upon returning discovers he's been gone for 300 years. A king is led into a cave by a pygmy-king and emerges to find an entirely different language and ruler in his land because it's over 200 years later. In this talk Dinsahw takes up several such Rip van Winkle stories from the Middle Ages as well as a retelling in modern times, in order to contemplate the continually perplexing nature of the present, the now. The everyday temporal linearity we think we experience turns out to be extraordinarily fragile, and the nature of time queerer than we might ordinarily suspect.

Gender Studies Program

What is it?

What does the invention of the dishwasher have to do with modern warfare and with men's and women's labor relations? How did leather jackets, turtlenecks, and hair in the 1960s signify intensely competing claims for white and black men's masculinities? More...

Why Should I?

Rigor and relevance. Gender Studies offers the pleasure of marked academic challenge-with the rigor of its cutting-edge scholarship-wedded to issues you're accustomed to discussing with family and friends. In a sense, your wider circle of relations end up "taking" these courses with you, insofar as your classwork will likely become the substance of countless debates and conversations with the people closest to you. How Do I?

The major culminates in the B.A. or B.S. through the interdisciplinary Social Science degree with an emphasis in Gender Studies. A number of graduate courses taught by affiliated faculty are also available to graduate students who have an interest in pursuing gender scholarship as an allied field of study. More...
